Honestly, in many ways I’d probably be more comfortable around a white person like this version of Sam than not, because at least I know what I’m getting with him. At least I won’t feel betrayed when someone who’s white who I thought was cool and “down” suddenly starts throwing epithets or whatever. More than that, if dude keeps working through the way Sam in the story is, I could accept him as changing. That being said, I’d be wary as hale. I’m not nearly as Christian like as Mercedes is in this story; but I have to believe people aren’t static. That’s lazy to think so. Would I date someone like this Sam…? Better question - would they even want to date me, because, well…I would constantly hurt their white supremacist feelings quite frankly - and do so with relish.

Short answer - get new friends, because these ones are toxic. Longer answer - your white friend is operating from a place of ignorance and privilege because if she spent one hour as a black woman she’d be a sobbing mess. Your other friends are just ignorant. The very fact you act means you “act black” because you are black. The barometer they’re using is one generally created by white people to be an “other” against the standard white OS on which this society runs. I wish someone would’ve told Lena Horne she wasn’t black, or Fredi Washington, or Adam Clayton Powell (just to name a few)…it’s more than just a hue. It’s a legacy, a history, a contemporary way of life no one can escape irrespective of economic strata. That is what makes one black or connected to the diaspora, not simply a shade or an affectation of coonery those not black (or secure in their blackness in and of themselves) want you to do. Further, if what you do is ascribed to whiteness, that’s not on you, that’s on them being racists.
